Are you too young for botox?

Am I too Young for Botox

Is there really a “too young” for Botox?

I am frequently asked by friends and family when they should start getting Botox (or Xeomin, or Dysport). Or I hear comments that so-and-so started getting Botox in her 30s, and isn’t that too young?

When should start getting botoxGuess what- there really is no “right” age for Botox. I started getting Botox at age 28, when I had access to it as part of my Plastic surgery training. (Coincidentally this was about the same time I noticed the frown lines between my eyebrows getting deeper!) But I’ve treated patients in their early 20s as well, who definitely benefited. And I’ve seen patients in their 40s who did not yet need Botox.

You’re only too young for Botox if you don’t need it yet.

My best recommendation is to start getting Botox when you need it.  How do you know if you What is the right age for Botox?need it?  Take a close look at your face in a mirror.  Botox treats wrinkles between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and over the forehead.  Dynamic wrinkles (i.e. wrinkles that appear with motion) form in these areas when you smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows.  In contrast, static wrinkles show even when your face is not moving. Looking at the pictures below, you’ll see deep lines over the forehead and between the eyes when the man is frowning (left side)- these are dynamic wrinkles.  On the right side, you can see that there are still some lines present even at rest- static wrinkles.

Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles.

Static wrinkles are basically a crease in your skin, similar to a crease in a wrinkled shirt. Botox stops dynamic wrinkles from forming, but it can actually prevent static wrinkles.

When should you get Botox?

  1. If you have dynamic wrinkles you don’t like. If you think frowning makes you look too angry, for example, Botox will help this regardless of your age.
  2. Or if you notice that you are starting to form static wrinkles, Botox will prevent these lines from becoming deeper.

It’s never too late for Botox!

Although Botox won’t completely erase static wrinkles if you have them, your skin will actually remodel over time. And other treatments such as injecting fillers or skin resurfacing can help speed the process along.
