What is Breast Implant Removal Surgery?

Breast implant removal surgery is a procedure where your saline or silicone implants are removed. These kinds of implants don’t last forever, and they typically need to be removed every 10 to 15 years. As time goes on, implants can shift, leak, develop calcium buildup, and form scar tissue. With removal surgery, we can remove the firm scar tissue and adjust the shape of your breasts if they’ve changed since your augmentation.

How Do I know if I Need Breast Implant Removal Surgery?

Dr. Greer will discuss everything you need to know about implant removal or replacement surgery during your consultation. There are a few factors that can determine when you should have your implants removed, including when you got them, whether you’re dealing with serious complications like breast implant sickness or cancer, or if your implants have ruptured and are leaking. Even if you’re just looking for a change in shape, Greer Plastic Surgery is here to help!

How Does Breast Implant Removal Surgery Work?

During a breast implant removal, we start by making incisions either around your areolas or under the lower part of your breasts. We’ll then remove your implants and put new ones in if you’re having a replacement. After everything has been removed and the new implants have been inserted, we’ll close the incisions with skin adhesives, tapes, or stitches. If you have scar tissue around your implants, we can also perform en bloc capsulectomies to remove both the tissue and implants all at once. Dr. Greer will walk you through the entire removal process during your consultation.

What is Recovery Like for Breast Implant Removal?

The recovery process for this procedure varies from person to person. The full healing period for breast implant removal is about a month, but Dr. Greer will discuss what your recovery will look like based on your body and the specifics of your procedure. Recovery is typically a little more difficult if an en bloc capsulectomy is performed. In comparison, simply switching breast implants out for a similar size makes for an easier recovery. Most patients only need narcotic pain medication for a couple of days and are able to return to work within a week. After healing, you may resume lifting weights or heavy cardio.

How Much Does Breast Implant Removal Cost in Mentor, OH?

The cost of a breast implant removal depends on how long the surgery will take. Typically, leaving the scar tissue capsule in place and removing just the implant costs much less than removing both. Another factor is whether you choose to get replacement implants or not. Replacement implants may be covered under warranty, so it’s always helpful to check with the manufacturer first to help lower your costs. During your consultation, Dr. Greer will provide you with a full cost breakdown, including surgical fees, new implant costs if applicable, and facility and anesthesia fees.

Breast Implant Ruptures & Breast Implant Illness Questions Answered

Both silicone and saline implants have an outer silicone shell, and they both can rupture. If your saline implant ruptures, the saline solution will be absorbed into your body, but the outer shell will require surgical removal. If your silicone implant tears, it can cause pain, breast thickening, or shape changes that will also require surgery.

You may have heard of breast implant illness (BII), which can have symptoms such as chronic fatigue and headaches, joint pain, insomnia, dry eyes, respiratory difficulties, hair loss and frequent skin rashes, poor memory, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. If you think you may have BII, Dr. Greer will work with you to find a solution, which may involve implant removal surgery.
